Researching the Local Farmer: Namayasai

Image
One of my friends in Sussex Roots introduced Namayasai to me when I asked them about the local farmers in Brighton. What is NAMAYASAI? It is a Japanese veggie farmers run by a couple, Robin Williams and his wife Ikuko. They grow and sell dozens of different organic Japanese vegetables by delivering Japanese vegetable box. According to their website,  http://www.namayasai.co.uk/ , it is "b ased in Lewes, in the county of East Sussex, England. [They] were among the first growers in the UK to pioneer the agroforestry method known as  'alley cropping'   and to attempt to use   conservation biological control   in a commercial free-of-subsidy setting. After 13 years [they] still use no pesticides, no fungicides and no herbicides - not even the approved organic chemicals. In this 8th year of setting up the alley cropping system it is still in it's infancy as we try to propagate trees that will both thrive in the range of soils nature has given [them] and that wi...

Research: Mathieu Asselin's Monsanto Project

Image
Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation - Mathieu Asselin Mathiew Asselin is a French-Venezuelan photographer artist specializing in documentary photography.  His work mainly consists out of longterm investigative documentary projects, such as his latest book ‘Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation’ , which received international acclaim, winning the Kassel FotoBook Festival Dummy Award in 2016, the Aperture Foundation First Book Award in 2017 and has been shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize in 2018.  In his work, he brings attention to the implications that Monsanto has created. By presenting its past and the present, he aims to demonstrate what Monsanto's near future will look like.    He does not claim to be an activist but he says "I need to ground my story in research".  But, aware of the responsibility he assumed when telling this story, Asselin says he strived to stick to facts – while also being critica...

Final Project Idea (Part 2)

Image
Final Project Brain Storming (Part 2) Topic: Food "Food never arrived on a plate by an accident" This is the message I aim to demonstrate in my project. My project on food would capture the disconect between producers and consumers. It will discuss whether our current world needs more conscious eating by presenting the photos of people who are conscious eater, such as the local farmers, vegan/vegetarian, and people who are growing their own food at the allotment. This is the elevator pitch for the topic for my photographic essay. I believe that it would be an exciting challenge to represent food in a powerful way, taking over the background story of how food arrives on our plate.  I think that it would portray the message that knowing about what we eat is crucial. Nowadays, most people buy their food in supermarkets and tend to look for cheaper products rather than making an ethical choices. This demonstrates how we do not take care of our environment as how we are ...

Week 5: Project Ideas

Image
Final Project Brain Storming I am interested in cultural difference between Japan and Brighton. ① Food Vegetarian/ Vegan Monsanto Hisbe and Infinity Foods and Vegbox Barcombe Farm Allotment Supermarket Food waste problem ② Fashion Fashion is about expressing your identity. I am interested in the details of the fashion people wear; what people could create and express their identity through fashion. It is about knowing people's creativity, self expression, and fashion. ③ Happiness The essence of health is being happy. It will show the power of happiness as it fights back against all the negative things (friendships, jobs, money, etc) that all human beings have to deal with. People tend to overthink but in reality all you have to do is to just let go of that and find your bliss or happiness, which is the key to  fulfilling your life.

Week 5: Mario Testino

Image
Mario Testino Most of his works are my taste. And I would like to do fashion photography like him. However, as I browsed through his works, I realized that he uses celebrities or professional models. Although his works stresses the importance of the subject, I wonder if I could find the suitable subject for my final project.
